Everyone knows how to play Bingo, but do you know how it evolved?

Bingo can be traced back to the 16th century, to  the period of the reunification of Italy. This was the beginning of the national state lottery game called "Lo Giuoco Code Loto", played in Italy in 1530. This national lottery game was played similar to how we play our current bingo game.

This game was hugely popular in Italy and it very quickly spread all over Europe. The first country effected by the Italian lotto craze was France. By the 1700s you could find it maturing in France where they were using playing cards, tokens and added the reading out of numbers. The main difference in France was that they used chips instead of balls using only horizontal rows to win. Cards were divided into three horizontal rows and nine vertical columns. Each horizontal row contained a total of nine squares - five with numbers and four blank squares - arranged randomly in the row. The vertical columns contained ten numbers each: column one contained the numbers 1 - 10, column two contained - 20, column three contained 21 - 30 and so on until the ninth column, which contained the numbers 81 - 90. Wooden chips with the numbers 1 - 90 were placed in a bag and drawn out one at a time. Each player had a unique lotto card and if the number called was on their card they marked it off. The first person to completely cover a horizontal row was the winner. When you won, you yelled BEANO!

The 1800s saw bingo widely used in Germany for educational purposes, to teach children spelling, animal names and multiplication tables. At the time, the name of the game was "Beano", because it was played using beans.

At a carnival near Atlanta in 1929, Beano was being played with dried beans, a rubber stamp and cardboard sheets. Edwin Lowe, was watching this game and noticed how engaged the players were. The Carnival worker had to kick the players out at 3 am. Lowe, took the idea with him to New York where he introduced the game to his friends. He conducted bingo games similar to the ones he had witnessed, using dried beans, a rubber numbering stamp and card board. In America, the name evolved from Bean-Go to our modern day name BINGO.

The Lowe Bingo Game had two versions; the first a 12-card set for $1.00, the second a $2.00 set with 24 cards. Bingo was a wild success. By the 1940s Bingo games were all over the country. Lowe had many competitors and all he asked was that they pay $1.00 a year to conduct the games and of course to use the name Bingo.

Although Bingo is a gambling game, it has never been seen as a 'sinful activity' like many other betting games such as blackjack, roulette, craps etc. Somehow Binog was able to keep a light and very clean image.
